When we were waiting to come into a liberty port, usually there were cargo ships or cruise liners or whatever there too... We'd pass the time and amuse ourselves while waiting for our turn by calculating torpedo firing solutions for them.
Why would what the containers look like terrify you?
They were ill-packed and unbalanced. If enough had poorly packed loads that shifted, they could unbalance the stack in rough seas. If enough stacks became unbalanced, they could damage or even capsize the ship.
Also, poorly-packed or loose loads could damage the container enough that they could break open. Loose cargo is dangerous, too.
