Long time readers of my LJ may have noticed a dearth of photography over the winter... For whatever reason, I've been in a long creative funk. I haven't stressed too much (at least publicly) because these things happen, and eventually they do end. I went on a photowalk with a camera club the other weekend and got a couple of decent shots, and did some editing from the archive last week... so it's been coming back.

But yesterday, a stream of water flowing across a parking lot caught my eye, and I got a pretty good shot. It's not the greatest ever, but I'm very pleased with it because I'm not only shooting again, I'm seeing again.

Shaving

Ever since I started shaving regularly for Movember, I've not really been happy with the process... which is part of why I grew a beard in the first place. So, yesterday, off the web to do some research on shaving. I discovered two things mainly... The first is that there is a lot of information on the web on just about any topic you care to name. The second is that there are a lot of people who obsess over any topic you care to name. (Neither should have been a surprise really though.) I found half a dozen discussion boards dedicated to shaving, most of whom eschew the modern multi-blade commercial razor (more on that below), some even going so far as to use an old fashioned straight razor. (Not for me! With my eye-hand coordination, that would be akin to Russian Roulette.) Many of the boards featured a "Shave of the Day" thread, where guys listed the razor, soap, aftershave, etc... they had used that day and often how the felt about the shave (subjectively and philosophically as well as objective results.) I found that *just* a little bit... creepy.

Anyhow, the results;
  • Soap The soap I'm currently using is a no-name brand from Rite-Aid... and it sucketh rocks. There's a lot of soaps out there, so some more research is indicated. The brand I used to use was a recommended starter, but I haven't seen it about in ages and ages. There's a couple of local places I haven't checked yet though...
  • Mug Other than slavish devotion to the Moss Scuttle among some... the general consensus was to use "whatever works". Coffee mug, sugar bowl, tupperware, the palm of your hand, whatever "it's all cool". My mug is a beat-up plastic travel mug bought from the Ship's Store thirty odd years ago...
  • Brush My current brush sucks, it's a cheap piece o' krep bought on the fly decades ago to replace another cheap piece o' krep whose handle broke. There's more than a few brush options, and they will let you spend about as much money as you want to. While I don't need a $300 brush, there's a variety of decent $20-$30 options out there that I'm considering.
  • Razor The more blades they've added, the crappier a job they've done on my face. There's a variety of single-blade option out there to look at (and cheaply available), so I'll be trying a few. As I said above, straight razors are however *right out*.

Busy, busy, busy...

The week past:

  • Wensday:  All day long at the county fair, alternating wandering about with working the desk in the photo competition area.  So far, of the photo's I took, there's a dismaying lack of keepers.

  • Thursday: Cleaning house in the AM, and our friends Chas and Andy arrived from out-of-town.  Up late chatting and catching up.

  • Friday: Hanging out and running around with Chas and Andy.  Up late again chatting and catching up and watching Really Bad movies on TV.

  • Saturday: Saw Chas and Andy off in the AM, then spent the afternoon/early evening at the Fair - this time just wandering about with my sweetie ([livejournal.com profile] brenda333, not that she ever posts anything).

  • Sunday: Chillin' around the house after four busy days.

The week to come:

  • Mon-Wens: Assorted preps for September Crown.

  • Thurs-Mon: September Crown itself.

Busy, busy, busy...

Off to email menu planning to our campmate before heading to bed...

Yeah, I know, first world problems and all that... But August is going to be one busy month, lurching from one thing to the next.

August 3-5 Summer Madness
The annual Baronial Picnic - and I'm in charge of the meat for the feast... Brenda will be staying home to deal with a sick piggie, so I have to camp by myself.

August 11-12 Photographic entries due for the County Fair
Which means picking the pictures I'm going to submit, and getting them printed and matted. The latter can take a couple of days, so I have to get the lead out ASAP.

August 11 EGG-Stravaganza
BGE gathering at the fireplace shop up in Poulsbo

Sometime the week of the 13th-17th will be judging for the Fair... and though I haven't talked to Jim yet, he knows I'm volunteering for support staff.

August 18 Sergeant's Trials
I'm coordinating the lunch

August 22-26 Kitsap County Fair
I'm figuring on at least one day and one evening/night photo session, plus Brenda will probably want to go on Sat.

August 31 - Sept 03 September Crown
I'm parking coordinator... I need to get volunteers and plans finalized.

And I haven't even listed the normal monthly round of meetings for various clubs, or the normal weekly socials and chores... Somewhere in there, I also have to wedge some shop time to finish various projects. By mid September it'll start getting cool and I'll have to start heating the shop and that gets expensive. (And I still haven't gotten the insulation in the ceiling.)

I haven't posted in a couple of weeks, so it's time for a quick catch-up on some of the highlights...

  • We went over to Seattle for the Smokin' in Seattle EGGfest. A whole day of hanging out with fellow eggers and sampling many fine dishes cooked on the Egg.

  • While there, we went over to Ikea and bought a new set of dinner dishes. We've been looking for a while now to replaces the mish-mash of pieces we've accumulated over the years... We were in Ikea a couple of months back, and saw two sets we liked but couldn't decide between. This time we got it down to one set, and I started to walk away because changing stuff that's been a part of our daily life for two decades is a Big Deal for me sometimes. (Especially when some of that stuff was a wedding gift.) Brenda insisted we go ahead and cut to the chase and buy the set, and so we did. We'll save one piece in our keepsake cabinet, one set of bowls will go into the RV, and the rest is undecided yet.

  • We also quietly celebrated our 22nd anniversary... I know I missed my annual post on the topic, but so it goes. We've never made a big deal out of it.

  • While grilling steak for our anniversary dinner, Brenda decided I had to re-create a pose in a picture she took of me when I was grilling steak on our honeymoon... now I've got to dig the old one out of storage and see how close we got.

  • Speaking of photography, I haven't been able to get out much and have been starting to feel the itch in the last week or so. I'm still hung up on processing and posting the June Faire photographs - but I'm sticking to my vow to process and post in the order they were taken.

And now... for the less good news...

Little Missy (one of our guinea pigs for you new folks) has been losing weight lately, and we've found a lump in her neck. Even with hand feeding, her weight is still less than optimal... and the vet feels that with her size (she's always been a very small pig) and weight loss she's a poor candidate for surgery. Caramel lost almost 250 grams in the weeks following surgery, and Missy only weighs 600 to start with... her chances for recovery are very, very slim. We just don't know what to do at this point. I don't know if I can take another loss so soon.

I'm installing a trial version of some photo-editing software. It was interesting to watch the last five years go by (nothing older on this machine) as it crawled my catalog and created thumbnails.

On the other hand, it was very disconcerting considering the cultural connotations of "having your life flash in front of your eyes". (Especially when it came across the folders of pictures of Caramel and of Dad...)

It's been a busy week so far, two nice warm days to get out into the shop, and today crawling through a backlog of email and projects at the computer and I still haven't had a chance to write and post on the weekend... Plus it's a three meeting week! (Tues, Fight Practice, Wens, Culinary Guild, Thurs, Wyverns.)

The summer is shaping up to be busy too...

Memorial Day Weekend - traditionally our Geocaching Intensive weekend.  Need to get started on the planning.
June Faire - first weekend in June, Culinary Guild and another project in the works.
Summer Madness - first weekend in August, feast-o-crat.
Searjentry Trials - on staff as a support member for one of the candidates.  (An honor but also a bummer, because I was considering putting in to be Event Steward.)
Kitsap County Fair - volunteering to help in various capacities, plus the Photography Supervisor wants me onboard in the administrivia too... (I am trying not to do this, but he's persistent.)

And that's not even mentioning that I'm feast-o-crat for Yule as well.  (And since it's My Lady's first time as Event Steward, something of a co-/advisor as well.)

Soaring in blue

I'm trying to get into the habit of choosing/editing/posting on a regular basis... so when I have nothing in the queue I dive into the archives. This picture was actually taken last Sept along with these images.

I tried to crop it more conventionally, with more space for the bird to fly into, but it never seemed to work. It just seemed to me that it want to be framed just as it (accidentally) came out of the camera. Among other things, it seems to represent how I'm still feeling and losses I'm still wresting with. I also like how the full (original) frame emphasizes how the color of the sky is *not* uniform. That can be to the photographer's advantage even at times that aren't sunrise or sunset.

I edited this in DPP, straight from the RAW. While DPP only allows a few basic whole-image tools, sometimes it's the best tool for the job. (And I'm slowly getting more comfortable editing from RAW and relying less on in-camera processing and complex edits in Elements.)

Also, this is the third minimalist seagull shot I've posted in a fairly short time span... (Others here and here.) I don't know what that says, other than they just keep catching my eye.

*If* you put too much soap in the washer, and *if* you have a decent shop vac, and *if* you use said shop vac to suck up the excess foam/water from the washing machine - it *will* make a credible attempt at vacuuming up the laundry as well.

  • Spotted a sailboat sunk in Phinney Bay last week that pokes above the water a low tide... I've gotten some decent shots when weather, tides, and light have cooperated. (Which hasn't been much.) The past two days I've been up at 5AM, but was only able to go out this morning - only to get maybe two usable shots before it began to drizzle.

  • There's also quite a few ducks/geese/seagulls/crows there, so I'll be shooting there a lot in the future I think. It's a hell of a lot more convenient, if less scenic, than Big Beef Lagoon. The really big advantage of Phinney Bay is that it's literally three minutes from the house - so if the light and conditions are good at the house, so it is as the bay. Big Beef is half an hour away...

  • Went to Matt's on Sat for Spiritmaker's Guild. Got a nice Nut Brown Ale started from malt syrup with added grains for the color/flavor. Determined that the logistics for our ultimate goal (brewed over an open fire from grain) will be a wee bit more complicated than we thought.

  • The van tossed it's serpentine belt on Sun. At last report from the dealer, the damage and the bill are growing considerably... It'll take some hard thought to figure out if it's worth it. The van is running like a top otherwise, and we just put a new transmission in it 20,000 miles ago - but it's got 130,000 miles on it.

Sitting here, sick and miserable - comparing my varied symptoms and worrying that they don't quite match whatever symptoms I think I should have for what I think I have.

I've been watching waaaaay too much House recently.
