Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell dies.

Freebird: (the full version.)

If there's a rock and roll heaven, you know they have a hell of a band...

The South's gonna do it again...

If Heaven Ain't A Lot Like Dixie...

Southern rock - part of the soundtrack of my youth. Even at the height of the disco era, no rock station was without its daily ration of Lynrd Skynrd or Allman Brothers or their like. Of course back then, there was no MTV and few national playlists dictated by marketing exectives distant from the local markets...

Southern rock.....one of the reasons I find myself listening to the country stations on occasion.

I remember an interview with Greg Allman where he said,"I never understood what they meant by Southern Rock. Rock was born in the south. It's like saying Rock Rock."

Derek,
Remember the summer of '77 - we were living in Orange Park, when the plane crashed and the music was changed forever. I remember driving down Blanding Blvd. when the funeral procession went by with Van Zant. Your Dad and I had seen them live many times when they were starting our at the Comic Book Club and then in 75 at the height of their careers. Free Bird is the song that frames the South in the 70's when country and rock and roll went to bed together and the whiskey throated music was born.
